On April 3, the President of Latvia Egils Levits sent the draft law "Amendments to the Law on Coats of Arms of Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme and Zemgale" to the Saeima for consideration, thus inviting the Saeima to approve the coat of arms of Sēlija.

"I have no doubt that the adoption of the coat of arms of Sēlija through legislation will strengthen the visual representation of the identity of this historical Latvian land and include it in the unified heraldic system of the Latvian state. The coat of arms of Sēlija will play an important symbolic role in the future policy of Sēlija, addressing the issues of preservation and future sustainable development of the cultural and historical environment of Sēlija," said the President.

The coat of arms of Sēlija was designed by the artist Mg. hist. Edgars Sims.

The coat of arms of Sēlija - the side-facing and walking silver red deer painted against the red background - was unanimously approved at the meeting of the State Heraldry Commission on 25 May 2022.
