“While working on further solutions to migration crisis and providing solidary contribution to the EU’s security, we must not forget about the obligation to arrange our national borders. Strengthening the eastern border of Latvia is a security issue both for Latvia and the European Union in general,” said President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis during a meeting with Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis today, March 16.

The officials discussed Latvia’s position on migration issues to be discussed in the EU Council on March 17 and 18. At the time, when the EU’s southern border is been strengthened, the President of Latvia calls for every effort be diverted at arranging the eastern border of Latvia.

“We must work so that our country’s border would not become a new way for refugees to Europe,” said Raimonds Vējonis.

The President of Latvia reminded that he had already emphasized the need to stabilize the crisis-stricken regions, so that refugees could return home. Migration crisis requires comprehensive solutions both for internal security, information exchange and cooperation among security authorities in the European Union and contribution of the European Union to strengthening the crisis-stricken regions.

While discussing security situation in the region, both officials discussed preparations of Latvia for the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw in July this year. Raimonds Vējonis had also discussed that in a recent conversation with President of Poland Andrzej Duda, hosting country of the Summit and concluded that the vision of both Presidents regarding the results to be achieved at Summit coincided.

“Participation in the NATO collective defence system, efficient and determined deterrence policy ensure security of Latvia. Therefore, the Warsaw Summit should decide on long-term and significant allied presence in the Baltic States and introduction of a more efficient management system able to respond to any threat to independence and security of our country immediately,” stressed the President of Latvia.

Raimonds Vējonis expressed satisfaction with the measures taken to strengthen national security, by noting the decisions on additional defence spending in particular. The President of Latvia also called on the government to be consistent in terms of investment to national security: the funds we were investing in security were investment in any sector.
