During a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis noted with compliments the very first visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Latvia during the long history of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This visit marks intensification of the political dialogue between Latvia and Iran.

 

The President of Latvia called for development of economic cooperation and diversification of exports with Iran, particularly in view of the decision on gradual lifting of the international sanctions. “The broad Iranian business delegation representing various sectors, as well as significant interest of Latvian entrepreneurs about the visit indicate the interest to expand economic and trade cooperation between Latvia and Iran,” indicated the President of Latvia.

 

A business delegation of about 70 persons accompanies the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran representing sector of food production, wood processing, pharmaceuticals, banking, and other areas.

 

In order to promote bilateral economic cooperation, Latvia and Iran stressed the need to finalize and sign the bilateral Air Transport Agreement and the Convention for Avoidance of Double Taxation as soon as possible.

 

The meeting participants recognized the need to continue the exchange of high- level visits and to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. Both parties recalled the reciprocal invitations to Presidents of both countries to visit Latvia and Iran accordingly.
