Raimonds Vējonis concluded that the executive power had much urgent tasks be solved, thus the main task of the next government should be devoted to priority issues that included national security, economic development, reforming the education system and accessibility to health care, as well as measures for substantial improvement of the demographic situation.
“Under the existing geo-political conditions, internal and external security of the country should be consistently kept as the highest priority of the government. Moreover, gas market liberalization and the strengthening of information space are very important security issues,” emphasized the President of Latvia.
In the area of economics, the new government should be able to provide economic growth of the country and eventually implement the “economic breakthrough” as laid down in the National Development Plan. The new government must ensure a stable and predictable tax policy, as well as reduce proportion of “shadow economy” significantly.
The President of Latvia also indicated that the spending of state budget should be understandable to the public and corresponding to the priorities of national development. Therefore, the government should have regular review of the budget baseline expenditure. Implementation of financing from the European Union Funds required prompt government decisions and actions as well.
“Only a decisive Prime Minister will be able to lead the new government, who is able to convene a strong and cohesive team of ministers with him or her, to work in a team and assume responsibility for the government's work as a whole. The members of the next government should have a good reputation and support of the community. Openness of a Prime Minister to communication with the public and explanation of executive power work will enhance public confidence in the power of the state as a whole,” expressed Raimonds Vējonis.
So that the President of Latvia could nominate a Prime Minister, the PM candidate and his Cabinet should obtain complete and full support of the newly formed coalition.
On December 10, the President of Latvia meets with representatives of the Social Democratic Party “Harmony”, political party “Unity” and the Greens and Farmers’ Union, while meetings with representatives of the National Union "All for Latvia!" - "For Fatherland and Freedom / LNIM”, Latvian Association of Regions and the political party "For Latvia from the Heart” are scheduled on December 11.
