On 8 February, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with delegation of Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) at the Riga Castle. Delegation is visiting Latvia to promote various aspects of European Union (EU) law and its direct effect on Latvia.
President of Latvia Egils Levits underlined the need to deepen awareness about the effect of EU Law on Latvia. ‘As an equal member state, we are co-responsible for the European Union. National and European laws converge in Latvia’s legal system. In many areas national laws are based on legal acts of European Union. It is a dimension that is rarely remembered because it is less present or influential in the lives of people,’ President Levits said.
Meeting between Egils Levits and CJEU delegation focused on current priorities of CJEU, impact of new technologies on evolution of laws and how that will affect the courts. Both sides called for continued efforts to raise the quality of legal training.
President Levits met with CJEU Justice Ineta Ziemele and CJEU Registrar Alfredo Calot Escobar, CJEU General Court Judge Inga Reine and heads of key CJEU departments.
