On 22 March, President of Latvia Egils Levits congratulated Valters Nollendorfs, Chair of the Occupation Museum Association of Latvia, writer and literature expert, with his 90th birthday and awarded Mr Nollendorfs the Certificate of Merit for his immense role in preserving the collective memory of the Latvian nation.
‘I admire the monumental work that you have done in creating Occupation Museum of Latvia and developing it into the core memory institution of Latvia. Under your leadership, the Museum of Occupation has collected and interpreted, and kept in our living memory, evidence of crimes committed by occupation powers against Latvian people, as well as heroic stories of national resistance movement. We highly appreciate your life-long social activism – you tirelessly fought for freedom of Latvia, you were active in the field of education, literature and history. Warmest greetings on your 90th birthday!’ says the Certificate of Merit signed by President Levits.
