On 25 April, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Latvia, Juris Stukāns, at the Riga Castle to discuss the allegations made in the public media on 24 April concerning potential interference in the 2014 Saeima elections.
The right of every citizen of Latvia to participate in the activities of the state and local municipalities in the manner provided by law, including the right to participate in elections, is enshrined in Article 101 of the Satversme. This right serves as the bedrock of the integrity of democratic systems and underpins the legitimacy of the state. Any interference in the conduct of elections is unacceptable in a democratic state governed by the rule of law. Consequently, any reports of possible electoral irregularities or corruption must be investigated with the utmost diligence.
Following Article 16 paragraph two of the Law on the Prosecution Office, the President of the Republic of Latvia requests the Prosecutor General to take the necessary measures and to investigate whether the state security and law enforcement authorities have received any reports or information about attempts to influence the results of the 2014 parliamentary elections. During the meeting, President Rinkēvičs instructed the Prosecutor General to conduct an investigation and to provide the President of Latvia and the Latvian public with a detailed account of its findings.
