Today, July 7, when meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis stressed that Latvia welcomed the good neighbourly relations and bilateral cooperation with Belarus, especially in economics and cross-border cooperation. He also expressed support for the opening of negotiations on the EU-Belarus cooperation agreement and called for further work on strengthening of human rights and democratic standards in the neighbouring country.

 

During the meeting, the President of Latvia confirmed that Latvia was interested in continuing and developing of bilateral cooperation with Belarus. He mentioned cooperation in transport and transit as particularly perspective ones.

 

Discussing the relations between the European Union and Belarus, Raimonds Vējonis emphasized the satisfaction on the fact that majority of the EU sanctions against Belarus were revoked proving positive development of the bilateral relations of the EU and Belarus.

 

Latvia was also interested in signing the European Union and Belarus agreements on visa facilitation and person readmission and concluding mobility partnerships, and Latvia supported cooperation of Belarus with international financial institutions and initiation of the accession negotiations with the World Trade Organization, according to the President of Latvia.
