Raimonds Vējonis
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis highly appreciates the successful dialogue with the Jewish community both in Latvia and on an international level. The President of Latvia admitted that during a meeting with the representatives of the American Jewish Committee on January 13.

 

Raimonds Vējonis emphasized that the Jewish community was a vital and active part of the Latvian society, and he expressed his pride in the people of Jewish origin, who were born in Latvia and have popularized the name of Latvia in various fields around the world.

 

A representative of the American Jewish Committee, David Harris said that the visit of the representatives of that organization to the Baltic States took place at significant time, because the United States of America had recognized the restoration of independence of the Baltic States 25 years ago. In its turn, the American Jewish Committee was an organization, which expressed its active support for that process.

 

The President of Latvia expressed his gratitude for contribution of the United States of America as a strategic partner of Latvia into the process of restored independence and support provided during the process of integration into NATO.

 

During the meeting, the President of Latvia informed the guests about the current situation as regards the issue of real estate restitution of the Jewish community. He expressed the hope that the draft law on the real estates be returned to the Latvian Jewish community would be adopted at the third reading in the Saeima already early this year.

 

The issue of the security situation in Europe and other topical issues of the European Union and NATO, transatlantic cooperation, Latvian-Israeli bilateral relations, migration, the Holocaust remembrance events, and historical research were discussed during the conversation as well.
