During the meeting, the parties paid great attention to building the future of the European Union (EU) and the shared responsibility of the Member States. President of Latvia Egils Levits emphasised, “I am convinced that Latvia and Estonia will be very active countries in the political discussions in the coming years when talking about the future of the European Union and various issues of modern identity. In the face of disagreement, we should find common solutions so that Europe remains united and strong based on shared values.”
Both Egils Levits and Jüri Ratas agreed that Latvia and Estonia had great potential for digital cooperation by creating joint digital services for their populations. The successful experience of both countries in the development of such digital services could be transferred to other countries in the future and could be expanded from a broader regional perspective.
The President of Latvia has also noted that Adviser on Information Space and Digital Policy Ms Ieva Ilvesa is working in his team, whose presence is a strong emphasis on highlighting and putting digital issues on the agenda of the President of Latvia.
During the meeting, Egils Levits and Jüri Ratas also discussed the involvement of both countries in strengthening NATO and examining common defence issues. The Prime Minister of Estonia welcomed the opening of the Headquarters Multinational Division North in Ādaži and stressed that it was a significant contribution to regional security.
Jüri Ratas also expressed gratitude to Latvia for its support to Estonia’s candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2020 - 2021.
