Raimonds Vējonis
“The upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw is likely to be particularly important in strengthening the security of our region, including a discussion on increasing NATO presence, for instance, in terms of machinery and equipment,” stressed the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis during his conversation with the President of Poland Andrzej Duda on Tuesday, September 22.

  

During the meeting both Presidents highlighted the good relations between the two countries and noted that it was essential to look for cooperation opportunities under current circumstances. The President of Poland mentioned promotion of good neighbourhood relations with the countries in the region as an important part of his work and he pointed out the need for mutual support and joint work on development of major infrastructure and energy projects. Raimonds Vējonis also encouraged thinking about cooperation in the sector of energy by diversifying sources of supply and reducing energy dependence on Russia.

 

In the context of regional security, the President of Latvia stressed the necessity to follow closely the developments in Ukraine. The President of Poland also noted unpredictability of the situation that caused concern in the long term. Both parties agreed that that issue should be on the international agenda by searching the ways to influence the situation efficiently.

 

To conclude, the President of Latvia invited the President of Poland to visit Latvia, by emphasizing significance of strengthening person-to-person contacts.
