One of the key focuses of the meeting was regional cooperation. President Levits and President Grabar-Kitarović discussed the so-called Three Seas Initiative, which envisages implementation of a number of infrastructure projects to connect the Baltic, Adriatic and Black seas. “Latvia supports this project. It will promote trade ties and movement of people,” said President Levits. President also underlined that Rail Baltica will contribute to better connectivity between regions of Europe.
Presidents of both countries also discussed programme of Croatia’s first presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2020. President Levits wished his Croatian counterpart a successful presidency and assured that Latvia will take active part in discussions on selected priorities. President of Croatia thanked Latvia for supporting Croatia’s accession to eurozone and Schengen area.
Another focus of the meeting was NATO and security situation in Europe and the world. President Levits thanked Croatia for deploying its troops in scope of the NATO multinational battle group to the Baltics.
Presidents of Croatia and Latvia agreed to intensify existing trade, education and cultural ties. Both presidents will soon meet at the 15th meeting of the heads of state of Arraiolos Group in Athens.
