On 3 August President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister of Transport Jānis Vitenbergs at the Riga Castle to discuss the current progress in the construction of the Rail Baltica project, the delivery of new electric trains, as well as transport and road infrastructure issues.
During the meeting, the President emphasised that the Rail Baltica project is a high priority for Latvia, and its importance had also increased in the defence and security context of Latvia and the Baltic States. "In the current situation, it is necessary to clearly and promptly identify the main obstacles to the project, the justification for the increase in costs and find appropriate solutions to successfully complete the project by 2030 in cooperation with Estonia and Lithuania. It is also important to use Latvia's transport infrastructure capacities for Ukrainian grain exports," said E. Rinkēvičs.
The meeting also discussed the project of JSC "Pasažieru vilciens" on the delivery of new electric trains. President Rinkēvičs urged the Ministry of Transport to find an appropriate solution and be able to guarantee the delivery of new trains by the end of this year, thus also ensuring a full investment of the European Union funds in the improvement of passenger transport services in Latvia.
