During the conversation, the President of Latvia noted that during regional visits local governments often express dissatisfaction with the existing financial equalisation system, stating that it is not effective enough. The total needs and costs have increased for all municipalities, but the existing funding is insufficient. Currently, both financially well-off and less well-off municipalities feel frustrated. Therefore, any new reforms require a review of existing resources. The quality of the services provided by the municipality should be the ultimate measure of success.
The parties also discussed the funding required to strengthen the capacity of defence and internal affairs services in the coming years. President Rinkēvičs stressed that the needs of both sectors should be considered together, and suggested aligning the remuneration system of the internal affairs with that of the defence sector.
