Official meeting between President of Latvia Egils Levits and recently appointed Minister of the Economy Ilze Indriksone took place on 21 July. President and Minister exchanged views on current energy agenda, namely immediate priorities with regard to Latvia’s energy security.
Minister of the Economy briefed President about current situation and projections regarding the gas supply for households and industrial consumers. President Levits and Minister Indriksone both underlined the need to proactively work on crisis management plans for various emergencies at the same time as solving various gas supply challenges in current volatile geopolitical environment. President urged Ministry to start working on legal and administrative regulations required to ensure that national energy companies can continue to operate at times of crisis.
Meeting between Egils Levits and Ilze Indriksone also focused on government assistance to vulnerable groups of population struggling with energy price increase. They discussed ways of incentivising households to step up the uptake of housing and building heat insulation replacement and universal energy efficiency programmes. Minister Indriksone also explained President Levits how Latvia will develop its strategic wind energy capacities by building dedicated farms.
In conclusion of the meeting Minister of the Economy promised support to NATO Innovation Fund, which is a strategic initiative endorsed by President of Latvia Egils Levits during the NATO Madrid Summit at the end of June.
