On 18 March, the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds at the Riga Castle. During the meeting, the parties discussed various aspects related to Latvia's military industry, including the military presence in the east of Latvia, long-term support for Ukraine, as well as cooperation and practical communication between the Ministry of Defence and the National Armed Forces (NAF) with Latvian municipalities.
During the meeting, the topic of Latvia's defence capabilities in the eastern border region of Latvia was discussed, as well as the progress made in establishing the NAF Sēlija military training area.
E. Rinkēvičs highlighted the importance of utilising technological advancements, such as drones and artificial intelligence, for national defence and security.
The President of Latvia also emphasized the need for Latvia and all supporters of Ukraine to provide Ukraine with the necessary equipment and support. At the same time, it is important to maintain Latvia’s long-term support through a clear vision and plan.
During the meeting, the President of Latvia was briefed on the Minister of Defence's perspective regarding the communication methods used by NAF units to engage with the Latvian population in the eastern border area, as well as their collaboration with local authorities to establish civil protection.
