President praised KNAB for its efforts and underlined that no circumvention of the law should be possible, and it should be penalised according to Administrative Law and Criminal Law. Egils Levits also said KNAB is doing a good job at explaining how the new financing model is supposed to work to both the general public and political parties.
President of Latvia and Head of KNAB both underlined that the new financing model has contributed to a better political culture, reducing the dependence of parties on generous donations from supporters who were using the old model to acquire hidden influence over political parties and conceal their real political significance from the public. The new model, which meets the democratic standards and puts Latvia among other European countries with similar systems, coupled with KNAB’s intense efforts to detect violations, will make party operations more democratic.
President Levits and Director Straume also discussed how to make implementation of the new model even more efficient and promote closer cooperation between KNAB and other law enforcement agencies, especially in the field of enforcement.
