Raimonds Vējonis
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis and the Commander of French Armed Forces, General Pierre de Villiers discussed the security situation in the region, as well as cooperation of Latvia and France in the field of defence, while preparing for the NATO summit in Warsaw, where decisions would be made on expanding the allied forces presence in the Baltic region, during their meeting on Tuesday, June 21.

 

During the conversation, the President of Latvia expressed his gratitude for French air policing in the Baltic States, as well as the active involvement in training of military forces, thus contributing to strengthening of security in the region. The President of Latvia highly appreciated the participation of France in establishment of the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Riga.

 

“Solidarity means a lot to us, especially in terms of increasing allied presence in the region. So, we look forward to growing political and military support of France to the Baltic countries,” stated President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.

 

The President of Latvia stressed at the same time that Latvia was an active and reliable ally in NATO and contributed itself to stability and security, including through participation in various international operations.

 

“We need to send a clear signal of our unity and commitment. It is important to acknowledge the importance of belonging to NATO,” said President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.

 

Raimonds Vējonis emphasized that the visit of the Commander of French Armed Forces took place at a crucial time, as the NATO Summit in Warsaw in early July would decide on common security challenges.
