President of Latvia Egils Levits met with H.E. Mr Pekka Haavisto, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland, at the Riga castle today. President Levits praised excellent bilateral relations and active security dialogue in the framework of the European Union and international organisations. President of Latvia and Finnish Foreign Minister discussed Latvia’s and Finland’s support to Ukraine hold off Russian aggression.
Latvia supports the establishment of a special ad hoc tribunal to hold to account perpetrators of the crime of aggression against Ukraine, President of Latvia stressed during a conversation about practical aspects of such a tribunal with the Finnish Foreign Minister. Latvia highly appreciates cooperation with Finland in various international organisations, especially in the area of stronger rules-based international order and other vital issues, Egils Levits pointed out.
The meeting also focused on Finland’s plans after acquiring full membership in the Alliance, and Minister Haavisto thanked Latvia for a speedy ratification of Finland’s official application for NATO membership.
