On 30 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Chairman of the Latvian Association of Local Governments (LALRG) Gints Kaminskis at Riga Castle to discuss the planned state and local government budget for 2024, including the remuneration of teachers in municipalities.
E. Rinkēvičs welcomed the fact that the Government and the LALRG have reached several agreements on the 2024 budget. The remaining differences of opinion show that the budget negotiations will not be the end of the dialogue and cooperation.
The parties also discussed the current situation with the remuneration of teachers in Latvian municipalities. Although funding has been allocated to increase teachers' salaries, they have decreased in some places. The LALRG vision on the improvement of the financial equalisation system for local governments was also discussed.
So far, the President of Latvia has visited nine municipalities on regional visits at the beginning of his presidency, and such visits will continue. Tomorrow, on 31 October, President Rinkēvičs will visit Jēkabpils Municipality.
