On 25 March, the Remembrance Day to the Victims of Communist Genocide, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with representatives of the Latvian association of the politically repressed persons.
‘25 March is forever cemented in the collective memory of the people of Latvia. It is a tragic day in the history of Latvian people. Many lives and futures were shattered by mass deportations,’ President of Latvia Egils Levits said at the opening of the meeting. According to Egils Levits, it is vital to pass memories of exile down to next generations, talk about deportations and crimes of Soviet rule against people of Latvia to young people. He thanked the Association for its role in furthering our nation’s collective memory.
Ivars Kaļķis, Chair of Latvian association of the politically repressed persons, stressed that Russian invasion of Ukraine and crimes against civilians remind us of the painful experiences of Latvians forced into exile.
Representatives of Latvian association of the politically repressed persons also presented their current priorities and future plans for Riga and the regions of Latvia.
