I extend my heartfelt congratulations to every patriot of Latvia as we mark the anniversary of the Latgale Congress.
Latvia cannot be imagined without Latgale, just as Latgale cannot be imagined without Latvia.
Therefore, the decision of the First Latgale Congress to unite Latgale with the Latvians of Vidzeme and Kurzeme into one nation, within one Latvia, is not merely a date on the calendar, but a historic milestone in our people's journey towards the establishment of a Latvian nation and state. The Latgale Congress is an invaluable chapter in the story of Latvia’s formation as a national and democratic state – a story that came into life on 18 November 1918, and one that we continue to shape and embody to this day. Most importantly, it is our story – the story of our state and the people of Latvia.
The 27th of April offers us not only a moment to reflect upon and honour the delegates of the First Latgale Congress and their contribution to Latvia, but also an opportunity to consider how each of us – in Kurzeme, Zemgale, Vidzeme, Sēlija, and Latgale – can and must contribute to building a stronger, safer, and more unified Latvian state and society.
I wish every patriot of Latvia to remain faithful to the message carried by Māra of Latgale: "United for Latvia!" May you have a wonderful day and be inspired with many good ideas to continue the story of Latvia!
