On 14 March, President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the Military Police of the National Armed Forces and met with the unit's commander, Colonel Ēvalds Kairišs, to receive a briefing on the unit's operational plans and capabilities. During the visit, E. Rinkēvičs expressed his gratitude to the soldiers of the Military Police Presidential Guard Service for their dedicated service.
The Military Police of the National Armed Forces was established in July 1997. Since 2009, the Military Police has included the Presidential Guard sub-unit, which is responsible for ensuring the safety of the President, the presidential institution, and guests. In addition, the Military Police is responsible for escorting and protecting military convoys and cargoes, as well as threat prevention. Furthermore, the Military Police is authorized to conduct pre-trial investigations following the competencies outlined in the Criminal Procedure Law.
