On 8 February, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš to discuss current government agenda. Meeting primarily focused on 2023 government budget and future of the Central Election Commission (CEC).
CEC must be better integrated into the government structure, President Levits pointed out. ‘It is stuck somewhere between Supreme Council and today. Adequate resources and better governance integration are essential. There is lack of ownership, which may lead to technical problems during elections. It is time to sort this out, like all other democracies have done. Central Election Committee must be integrated either into government or parliament,’ he said.
In case of Latvia, CEC should be under the Saeima, President Levits suggested.
