During the meeting, the implementation and the progress of the Development Plan of the National Armed Forces (NAF) for 2016-2028 were discussed, taking into account the increase of the national defence spending to 2% of the gross domestic product.
The NAF Commander introduced the President of Latvia with the plans to foster the development of the battle and response capability of the NAF, including the National Guard, as well as ensuring civic and patriotic upbringing in the New Guard, schools, and universities.
Building combat readiness of the NAF will also be one of the key activities in 2018 by continuing the personnel training, procuring gears and equipment, and the development of military base infrastructure.
As the President of Latvia outlined, providing support to the NATO multinational forces deployed here was an essential task of Latvia as a hosting nation by ensuring their deployment and the conduct of joint military exercises.
This year, from August 20 to September 2, the most massive military exercise Namejs 2018 organised by the Ministry of Defence and the National Armed Forces will take place in the territory of Latvia, where Latvian and allied soldiers and national guards, as well as reserve soldiers and the staff of the bodies subordinate to the Ministry of Interior, will participate.
