On 19 June, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs chaired a meeting of the National Security Council (Council) at the Joint Headquarters of the National Armed Forces. The meeting addressed the issue of Latvia's civil protection system and its management, with a particular focus on the involvement and responsibility of local governments, the improvement of the system's management and organisation model, as well as the availability of shelters.
The participants received a report from the Ministry of the Interior on the advancement of the development of the civil protection system. The Council discussed the potential ways to enhance the management and organization model of the civil protection system. The President of Latvia has called upon the relevant authorities to collaborate closely with local governments in order to provide them with the necessary support for the establishment of a system to protect the population of Latvia and to bolster the readiness of the national military defence. At the same time, the President of Latvia emphasised the responsibility of municipalities in developing and implementing civil protection plans, as well as in explaining them to the residents.
The Council members received a report on the enhancement of the management of the state material reserves and discussed the improvement of the early warning system.
The Council also received reports from national security authorities on the prevailing situation in the country.
