On 20 March, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs chaired a meeting of the National Security Council (Council) at the Joint Headquarters of the National Armed Forces. The meeting focused on the measures to enhance the military defence of Latvia's eastern border.
The Minister of Defence and the Commander of the National Armed Forces reported on the military defence of the eastern border, including the establishment of defensive positions, obstacle zones and material storage facilities. The Council members stressed that this work should be done by collaborating closely with local authorities and the National Border Guard, and in liaison with Estonia and Lithuania.
The Council called for the Latvian public to be informed about the planned measures and executed tasks, with due regard for data protection and confidentiality. At the same time, Council members noted that the security and economic development of the country's eastern border area are equally important objectives from a national security perspective. The participants agreed to revisit this issue by the end of the year to assess the progress made and consider further work in line with the 2025 defence funding plans.
