On 25 October, a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) was held at the Riga Castle under the leadership of the President Edgars Rinkēvičs. The meeting discussed the current security situation in the Baltic Sea and wider region, as well as the situation in the Middle East.
Participants heard updates from national security institutions on Latvia’s security issues. The NSC noted the importance of critical infrastructure protection and threat prevention. Damage to the Baltic Sea's underwater infrastructure needs to be investigated and, based on the results of the investigation, appropriate measures should be taken to improve protection and threat prevention capabilities.
The NSC discussed developments in the Middle East. The NSC also heard a report on Latvia's ongoing support to Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression and underlined the importance of continuing to provide consistently broad and extensive support to Ukraine's self-defence capabilities.
President Rinkēvičs will convene the next regular meeting of the NSC to assess the progress achieved in the area of penal policy and the protection of the eastern border.
