On 27 September, a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) was held at the Riga Castle under the chairmanship of President Edgars Rinkēvičs. The NSC discussed the National Security Concept and the construction of Latvia's eastern border.
In accordance with Article 27(2) of the National Security Law, the NSC examined the National Security Concept.
The construction of the border security infrastructure was reported on by the State Enterprise ‘VNĪ’, the State Enterprise ‘LVRTC’ and the Ministry of the Interior. The NSC assessed positively the decisions taken to accelerate the construction process. The NSC agreed to get acquainted with the results of the construction works at the end of this year.
The participants of the meeting listened the conclusions of the State Audit Office on the obstacles to the development of border infrastructure. The NSC called for the organisation of control over the use of public funds in projects of national security importance in such a way as to ensure both the necessary monitoring and the timely implementation of the projects concerned.
The commander of the National Armed Forces reported on the support to the State Border Guard in border protection, which will be provided until the construction of a complete border infrastructure, and informed the NSC on the plans for a technical solution for military defence, which would ensure the military protection of the country's population and territory from the first centimetre.
The next NSC meeting will take place in October. The date will be announced separately.
