On 9 March, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, at the Riga Castle. OECD Secretary-General is visiting Latvia to present the most recent economic survey on Latvia and discuss geopolitical impact on current economy.
Meeting with OECD Secretary-General focused on Economic Survey on Latvia recommendations for sustainable economic growth, especially necessary reforms to ensure energy supply independence, labour market activation policies, measures for higher export capacity and productivity, investments in knowledge economy, research and development.
Other topics included OECD-wide platform on minimum income and digital tax and Secretary-General’s initiative for international carbon pricing framework.
President Levits thanked OECD for recommendations and analytics and invited OECD to workout out policies for softening the impact of current geopolitical crisis.
Egils Levits urged OECD to keep up the good work and continue strengthening democracy and fight against misinformation.
Meeting then moved on to the Three Seas Business Forum, which will take place in Riga this June, and possible participation Secretary-General Cormann.
President praised OECD for giving swift and firm response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and solidarity with Ukrainian people that has led to decision to suspend Russia’s OECD accession process and discontinue collaboration with Russia and Belarus under OECD.
