Today, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with the new Minister for Welfare Gatis Eglītis in the Riga Castle to discuss the current social policy challenges.
Minister presented his plans on guaranteed minimum pension as a step towards more simple benefit system.
Meeting focused on challenges to self-employment and part-time work caused by tax reform. Reform needs adjustments to better reflect the real income on the individual level and ensure fair social contributions, President stressed.
Minister also explained his take on how EU funding can be used to implement medium-term labour mobility programmes to reduce the structural unemployment.
