In order to limit the constantly growing climate change, achieving a comprehensive and binding agreement among all countries of the world is essential. This would enable reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions and would ensure that an increase in global average temperature remained two degrees to the end of this century compared to the pre-industrial era. President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis emphasized that in Paris on Monday, November 30, where he participated in the ongoing Conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 21).

“Latvia and entire European Union (EU) wish that all the countries took part in the Paris Agreement and that the agreement would be binding. It would be a long-term solution to mitigate global climate change and would considerably expand a range of the countries engaged in the fight against climate change if compared to the Kyoto Protocol adopted in the late nineties,” indicated the President of Latvia. Raimonds Vējonis also stressed that all countries should set targets for emission reduction and implement them, as well as the Paris Agreement should take into account the existing situation in and economic opportunities of the countries.

“We see that climate change affects all regions of the world, and countries must act jointly and purposefully to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That is joint responsibility of the entire world, and we also must contribute to the fight against climate change. Latvia is one of the greenest countries in the world, but we can do more,” said the President of Latvia.

The Heads of state and government from 147 countries participate in the UN Conference on climate this year in order to agree on decisive action to reduce harmful emissions, taking into account that the current global warming threatened to extensive flooding or prolonged heat waves and droughts, which could critically affect the global development.

It should be noted that the meeting of the Heads of state and government launched the 21st Session of the UN Conference on climate change that would work until December 11. The President of Latvia, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, and representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Agriculture will represent Latvia at the Paris Conference.
