It is important for Latvia to find new opportunities for cooperation with the regions less explored up to now, by expanding the development opportunities available to our entrepreneurs. The President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis stated that on Tuesday, October 6, when accreditingthe Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Honduras Mr. Roberto Flores Bermúdez, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola Mr. Isaías Jaime Vilinga, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Peoples’ Democratic Republic of Algeria Mr. Salah Lebdioui to Latvia.

 

During the meeting with the Ambassador of Honduras, the President of Latvia expressed the wish that the relations between Latvia and Honduras would become more active, by strengthening cooperation in the area of economics, trade, education, and tourism. Raimonds Vējonis said that Latvia as a small and open economy encouraged its entrepreneurs to enter new export markets, but support of Honduras was very essential for Latvia in those efforts.

 

In terms of education, the President of Latvia pointed out that Riga Technical University (RTU) wished to expand its cooperation with Latin American institutions of higher education, by opening the American and Caribbean Countries Centre in Riga. RTU already invites students from Honduras, with which Latvia has established the visa-free regime, to study in Riga and obtain an internationally recognized diploma.

 

During the meeting with the Ambassador of Angola, the President of Latvia outlined that the two countries established diplomatic relations recently, but there were vast opportunities to expand cooperation between the two countries, especially in the field of economics. During the meeting, the President of Latvia stressed the role of Angola in strengthening stability of the African Great Lakes region. The Ambassador highlighted that Angola supported the solutions proposed by the EU to reduce refugee flows from the African continent and was ready to participate actively in implementation of those solutions. The Ambassador also expressed an invitation to the President of Latvia to visit Angola.

 

During his meeting with the Ambassador of Algeria, the President of Latvia expressed Latvia’s interest in promoting political dialogue with Algeria, including signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries. The President of Latvia noted that Latvia was interested in promoting cooperation in the area of education, energy, agriculture, and fisheries as well. By agreeing to the President's remarks, the Ambassador of Algeria expressed the need to strengthen the legal framework between the two countries.

 

The officials also discussed the security situation in Africa, including Mali and Libya. The President of Latvia emphasized the contribution of Latvia in strengthening security in Africa, including participation in the EU missions in Central Africa and Mali last year, and the upcoming participation of Latvia in the UN peacekeeping mission to Mali in the first half of 2016.
