President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Head of the Saeima Committee of Education, Culture, and Science Arvils Ašeradens and discussed issues of higher education quality, science governance, and science-based potential for national economic growth in the Riga Castle today.
The discussion focused on the issues of science governance, linking research and education, and developing a forward-looking education system that would foster innovation and science-based economic development in Latvia. Among them, Arvils Ašeradens noted that one should pay great attention to the promotion of exact science studies and specifically to the training of high-level IT specialists in this context. The President of Latvia also emphasised the need to promote extensive work that would increase the international competitiveness of Latvian universities and the growth of a new generation of professors at universities, to which Arvils Ašeradens expressed his full support.
Egils Levits and Arvils Ašeradens talked about the broader involvement of scientists in the legislative process and other issues important for the country’s development.
