President Sassoli underlined that Europe is very much the focus of this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF). The rest of the world is keen to learn more and get better insight into choices Europe will make in future. Egils Levits pointed out that the European Green Deal is a strong initiative and it is important for all member states to find consensus on its practical and meaningful delivery. President of Latvia also stressed that Latvia is one of the greenest countries with rich renewable energy resources and should serve as a role model for other member states.
Egils Levits and David Maria Sassoli also discussed current EU challenges and exchanged views on employment, sustainability, impact of digital technologies on society and media, cohesion policy, agricultural policy and other areas of EU’s multi-annual financial framework.
President of Latvia and EP President also discussed EU security. President Levits thanked the Italian government and people for committing Italian troops in scope of international forces for protection of EU’s external border in Latvia together with Latvian forces. EP President Sassoli, who is Italian, underlined that citizens of Northern and Southern European Union member states are well aware of the significance of EU’s external border and the need to ensure collective protection of these borders.
David Maria Sassoli also underlined that he is looking forward to President Levits’ address and visit to the European Parliament which is expected to take place in May this year.
