On 31 October, President of Latvia Egils Levits swear in district (city) judges Laura Smukule, Miks Čevers, Gunta Lauska and Ilona Sabīne Sviķe who gave their judicial oath during a special ceremony in the Riga Castle.
‘Judges ensure the rule of law in our country, and rule of law is one of the fundamental elements of our democracy. We are a state run by democracy, we are socially responsible and adhere to the rule of law. This makes your duties special for our people and Latvian State. Powers vested in you require you to be independent or have the capacity to make autonomous decisions free from any outside influence. Capacity developed with experience,’ President of Latvia said to new judges.
