On 14 March President of Latvia Egils Levits led a discussion about Latvia’s legal assistance to Ukraine, including a system for collecting testimony from Ukrainian refugees about war crimes perpetrated by Putin’s regime in Ukraine. The participants of the discussion were Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns, Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Representative of Latvia before International Human Rights Organisations Kristīne Līce and Advisor to the Minister of Justice Inguna Preisa.

After the meeting, President of Latvia Egils Levits announced that the Prosecutor General’s Office will examine and collect testimonies from Ukrainian refugees and forward them to the investigators of the International Criminal Court in the Hague. The President also noted that Latvia was joined Ukraine’s application against Russia filed with the International Court of Justice and will support Ukraine throughout the proceedings. 

“This type of legal assistance at an international level is crucial for upholding the standards of international order. Latvia can provide an important contribution here,” Egils Levits said.
