Twenty-six years ago, we returned to freedom and our own country. On 21 August 1991, the Supreme Council declared in the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia that Latvia was an independent democratic republic once again, where sovereign state power belonged only to the people of Latvia. The fifty-year long struggle for the restoration of our country was crowned with victory, because Latvia became independent of the foreign power again.

Today we can assess how much we have achieved in these twenty-six years. We can feel safe in Latvia, and peace reigns in our country. We are free and we create our own future and the future of our children. Almost everything depends on ourselves starting from our dignity and diligence to our attitude towards our relatives and Latvia.

The first words of the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia remind the fact that on 21 August 1991 the members of the Supreme Council acted in recognition of their responsibility towards the people of Latvia. We require understanding our responsibility for the future of Latvia also today. Good thoughts, made decisions and achievements of everybody create tomorrow and strengthen Latvia.

Let us celebrate the restored independence today and be proud of Latvia! Let us be responsible for Latvia! We must ensure all together that Latvia prospers and develops.
