Dear pupils and teachers of the 2nd Gymnasium,

I
I am absolutely thrilled to return here for the 1st of September assembly after so many years. I think this day is marked with mixed feelings. You are sad about leaving the summer, which had ended so fast, behind, but you are also excited to see each other again, thrilled about the upcoming term and school life. Mixed, but positive emotions, nevertheless.
I am touched to see the bright and loving faces of teachers and pupils who are ready to continue their journey towards complete learning.

School years are a wonderful time of life when you can, and actually are required to, spend all your time on yourself and your growth, nothing else. Enjoy this time. Moments of discovery, realisation of new things you were not aware of before. Learning always comes with joy of discovery.
Later, when you will apply for car loan, you will be able to calculate the best loan scenario, or, if somebody tells you they have travelled to Tobago, you will not only know its geographic location, you will also know its history and links with the Dutchy of Courland. Potential employers will judge whether you are fit for the job based on whether you have used the commas right to separate the participial phrases in your job application. In other words, your schooling will play a decisive role in your life.

You are special. Each one of you is unique and original. Diversity created by you is what sets Latvia apart from the rest of the world. This diversity is extremely valuable, so never stop nurturing and multiplying it!
Congratulations on the First Day of School! This is also my school where I began my education on the 1st of September of 1962. I wish teachers endless energy and pupils to pass all tests with ease.
