Today, at his Ärma farm, the Estonian head of state, Toomas Hendrik Ilves hosted the Latvian president Andris Bērziņš. The unofficial meeting of the two leaders focused on Europe and the euro area.

Latvian First Lady Dace Seisuma will attend an Easter event at noon on Saturday, April 6, which is being organised by the Latvian Association of Foster Families at the Latvian Open-Air Ethnographic Museum. The event will bring together foster parents and children who will play games with Mrs Seisuma and take part in other events to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Mr President, Madam First Lady, Excellencies, Ladies and gentlemen, I am most honoured to welcome you, Mr President, your spouse and delegation at the official visit to Latvia. This is the fifth presidential visit between our countries since the restoration of diplomatic relations in 1991.

Turkish Republic President Abdullah Gül and First Lady Hayrunissa Gül began a two-day official visit to Latvia today by attending a greeting ceremony at City Hall Square by the House of Blackheads. Latvian President Andris Bērziņš met with President Gül and the delegations of both countries, which included several government ministers.

Latvian President Andris Bērziņš and First Lady Dace Seisuma visited the Haemato-Oncology Ward at the Latvian Paediatric Hospital as part of a “Sunny Days” charity project that is aimed at reconstructing the facilities of the ward.

During a meeting with organisers of the “Eustory” competition on March 21, Latvian President Andris Bērziņš noted the completion of a very important project that began in the autumn of 2012 – the Latvian Commission of Historians and the Latvian National Library have digitalised all 27 of the commission’s compendia of scholarly papers, making them available at no cost to all who are interested in them.

Latvian President Andris Bērziņš met on March 21 with organisers of the “Eustory” (History Network of Young Europeans) history competition from 22 European countries, including representatives of the Latvian Association of History Teachers. The focus at the meeting was on results that have been achieved and on those areas in which future research may occur.

Latvian President Andris Bērziņš met on March 20 with Her Majesty Sylvia, Queen of Sweden, to discuss the bilateral partnership between the two countries, plans for Rīga and Umeå as the European Capitals of Culture in 2014, and the importance of a mentoring programme in which the queen is involved.

Latvian President Andris Bērziņš continued his official visit to Ukraine on March 15, meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak. The discussion in both cases focused on Ukraine’s movement toward the European Union and the legislative and other changes which will be required in the context of the integration process.

President Andris Bērziņš began his official visit to Ukraine today, meeting Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich at a greeting ceremony that was followed by a bilateral meeting between the two heads of state and then a meeting between the delegations of the two presidents.
