“Georgia is one of the closest partners of the NATO and the European Union, and Latvia fully supports the further Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia,” emphasised President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis during his state visit to Georgia on Tuesday. During the meeting with President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, the President of Latvia pointed out that Latvia appreciated the open and constructive dialogue with Georgia both at the level of top officials and in cooperation among the experts and businesses from both countries. “This visit is a proof of friendship and close cooperation that our countries share,” stated Raimonds Vējonis.

Today we commemorate one of the darkest pages in the history of Latvia. On 25 March 1949, the Communist occupation regime deported more than 42 thousand inhabitants of Latvia. It is incomprehensible nowadays how more people than currently living in the whole Ogre Region could have been physically captured and deported in one day on the territory of Latvia. Today we honour the victims of the deportations, and we remind others and ourselves, why we must never forget this tragedy.

President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis reviewed 24 pardon applications from the convicted, and he pardoned one convicted person by partially relieving him from serving the main punishment. The pardoned person was convicted of criminal offences against property and national economy.

President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis and First Lady of Latvia Iveta Vējone will pay a state visit to Georgia from March 27 to March 30. The visit is aimed at strengthening the bilateral relations between Latvia and Georgia, and Georgia’s cooperation with the European Union and the NATO.

Dumeni Tuufilwa Haufiku, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis confirmed that Latvia was interested in expanding cooperation with African countries, including Namibia while searching for new export markets.

In order to strengthen the confidence in a professional and fair trial, whom one could trust, the judges of the Supreme Court of Latvia should participate in improvement of Latvian legal system and public legal and political discussions being significant for the public, as President of Latvia  Raimonds Vējonis stressed in his greetings to the plenary assembly of the Supreme Court of Latvia convened today.
