On 24th March 2004 the President of Latvia V.Vīķe-Freiberga promulgated the “Law on State Awards” adopted by the Parliament on 4th March 2004. The Law sets out the procedure for establishing new awards, conferring and wearing of the existing ones.
The Law assigns the status of state awards to orders listed therein and their medals of honour as well as the Commemorative Medal of the Participant of the 1991 Barricades. There are the following state awards in Latvia: the Order of the Three Stars and its Medal of Honour; the Order of Viesturs and its Medal of Honour, the Cross of Recognition and its Medal of Honour; the Commemorative Medal of the Participant of the 1991 Barricades.
